The Minnesota Lynx and Connecticut Sun face off in their first WNBA game of the season on Sunday at IMG Academy.
The Connecticut Sun had an impressive year last year losing to the Washington Mystics in the WNBA Finals. The Sun finished the year with 23 wins and they hope this can be another impressive season. The bad news coming into this season is the Sun are going to be very shorthanded with leading scorer Jonquel Jones deciding to sit out of the season. Some of the players the Sun will lean on is Jasmine Thomas, Alyssa Thomas, and DeWanna Bonner. In this game, the Sun are going to need some of the younger players to step up and find success.
On the other side of this matchup is the Minnesota Lynx who have a rich history, but they are coming off a down year where they won 18 games. That was enough to make the playoffs, but the Lynx were bounced in the first round. This is a talented roster that is led by Sylvia Fowles who might be the best center in the WNBA. During the 2019 season, Fowles averaged 13.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. One of the big issues for the Lynx is they still don’t have Maya Moore who is sitting out to fight for social justice. Another player that is going to be leaned on heavily in this game and this season is Napheesa Collier who was a standout last season as a rookie.
The Lynx are 3-3 against the spread in their last six games against the Sun. Connecticut is 4-2 straight up in their last six meetings in Minnesota. Four of the last six games played between the Lynx and Sun have gone under the total.
In terms of depth, the Lynx have more and without Jones the Sun are going to have a lot of issues scoring and keeping this game close. In this game, the Lynx are going to run up the score and Connecticut isn’t going to be able to keep up. The Lynx will come away with a win and a cover of the spread in this game.
