Yulia Putintseva enters the China Open main draw for the eighth time in her career. Putintseva has lost in the first round in Beijing three times and four times in the second round stage. She has never gone beyond the second round. Last year, she lost to Naomi Osaka in her opening match. Putintseva lost her spot in the Top 20 this season after a difficult campaign which has seen her record 16 wins and 22 losses. 

Putintseva snapped a six-match losing run at the US Open last month when she beat Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round, but lost to Anna Kalinskaya in the subsequent round. The 30-year-old last competed at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals where Kazakhstan lost a close quarterfinal to United States. Yuan Yue won her first WTA title on hard courts a little over a year ago in Austin, Texas, but the Chinese player has also struggled for form in 2025. Yue has compiled 16 wins and 23 losses this season and saw her ranking fall out of the Top 100. Yue is competing in her third China Open main draw, having reached the second round in each of the last two appearnaces.

Yue is on a four-match losing streak and was last in action at the Billie Jean King Cup representing host nation China. They lost in the quarterfinal stage to eventual champions Italy. Yue was involved in a singles match where she led Elisabetta Cocciaretto by a set and a break, but could not serve for the match.
