Marta Kostyuk vs Yulia Putintseva Preview
Marta Kostyuk enters the Madrid Open ranked 23rd in the WTA rankings. She’s not far from her previous career high ranking of No. 16. Kostyuk is coming off a title success in the WTA 250 event in the Rouen Open this past week, where she won a historic all-Ukrainian final against compatriot Veronika Podrez. It was her second Tour-level title and first since lifting the Austin 250 in 2023. Kostyuk is the 26th seed in Madrid. This is her seventh appearance in the main draw. She achieved her best result in this tournament last year by making the quarterfinals and running eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka pretty close in two tiebreak sets. Overall, Kostyuk is 12-4 for the season, which is a decent return considering that she missed competition in the whole of February because of injury. As a seed, she received a BYE in the first round.
Yulia Putintseva is ranked 80th in the WTA rankings. She is a former Top 20 player. The Kazakhstani won her opening match at the 2026 Madrid Open, beating Czech teenager Tereza Valentova in three sets. The match took 29 games to decide. Putintseva prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in nearly three hours. Putintseva needed six match points in the final two games to close out the victory.
In the victory, Putintseva landed 72% of first serves in play and won 68% of first serve points (48/71). Putintseva won 41% of second serve points (11/27) and saved three of seven break points. Putintseva won 47% of return points (60/127). Putintseva is undefeated in her last three matches. It’s her best win streak since the Australian Open, where she reached the fourth round.
