Aryna Sabalenka opened her 2025 WTA Finals campaign with a straight sets win over Jasmine Paolini. The match took 16 games to decide. Sabalenka won 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 11 minutes, hammering 11 aces and winning 66% of first serve points in the match (29/44). She also saved three of four break points.

Sabalenka won her second match to remain unbeaten in the group. She defeated Jessica Pegula in three sets. The match took 27 games to decide. This will be the first meeting between Sabalenka and Gauff since that French Open match back in June. Sabalenka was the favorite then and still is in this 12th meeting between them. The Belarusian is probably in much better shape and form and has played solid tennis under pressure all season (with the one exception, as far as I remember, being that match at Roland Garros). Gauff is normally capable of retrieving plenty of balls and eliciting errors from Sabalenka, whose margin for error shrinks when rallies extend. I still think Sabalenka will edge this, so I’m leaning toward the World No. 1 here.
