Stan Wawrinka vs Flavio Cobolli Preview
Stan Wawrinka confirmed Switzerland’s victory in the opening tie against France thanks to a dramatic comeback win against Arthur Rinderknech. It was Wawrinka’s first win on hard courts against a top-50 player and it was achieved in the most remarkable fashion.
After Rinderknech held from 0-40 at 4-all in the first set, he broke Wawrinka in the 12th game to seal the opening set. The 40-year-old Wawrinka, who is playing in Perth for the first time in his farewell year, refused to give in and won a 64-minute second set in a tiebreak with his trademark one-handed backhand down the line.
The two players exchanged breaks early in the third set and it was another tiebreak that would be needed to determine the final outcome. This time, Wawrinka held his nerve to win the breaker 7-5 and put Team Switzerland on their way to a 3-0 win in the tie. Wawrinka hit 6 aces and 2 double faults in the victory. He landed 57% of first serves in play and won 78% of first serve points (53/68). Wawrinka won 60% of second serve points (31/52) and saved two of four break points.
Flavio Cobolli was Italy’s hero in their Davis Cup title in Bologna at the end of last season, and he’s been called to represent his country as their No. 1 men’s singles player in the United Cup. This is his second successive appearance in this competition. Last year, he posted two out of three wins in singles.
Cobolli compiled 39 wins and 31 losses in the whole of 2025, in which he broke the world’s top 20 for the first time after lifting titles in Bucharest and Hamburg, in addition to helping Italy retain the Davis Cup title. Cobolli eventually finished the season ranked World No. 22. Italy’s best achievement in the short history of the United Cup was reaching the final in 2023, where they lost to the USA.
Stan Wawrinka vs Flavio Cobolli Head-To-Head
Wawrinka and Cobolli have met once on tour. Cobolli outlasted the Swiss legend in three sets at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.
Stan Wawrinka vs Flavio Cobolli Prediction
Wawrinka rolled back the years in the opening tie against France to produce the sort of comeback win that defined the second half of his career. This will be his final season, and he’s made sure to leave an indelible mark from day one. But it will be tough to back up that result immediately after a draining win. Give me a fresh Cobolli to outlast the Swiss legend again.
