Victoria Azarenka and Olga Danilovic meet in the first round of the 2025 WTA Madrid Open on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Here’s our Victoria Azarenka vs Olga Danilovic prediction. This preview will also include a Victoria Azarenka vs Olga Danilovic pick.

Victoria Azarenka Preview

Victoria Azarenka will play in her first tournament since recovering from a shoulder injury. Azarenka picked up that injury in Miami where she retired in the second-round match against Karolina Muchova while trailing 0-6. Azarenka left the court in pain and tears and only recently issued an update on her recovery.

She didn’t enter into any events in the past week and will therefore begin her European clay-court swing at the Madrid Open. Azarenka is a two-time runner-up at the Spanish capital, but that was over a decade ago when she was ranked in the top three places in the WTA rankings. Last year, she reached the third round. She was seeded and only needed to win one match. But this week, she is unseeded and in danger of falling outside the Top 50. Azarenka has compiled a 4-6 record in 2025. This will be her seventh tournament and has only advanced beyond the second round once.

Olga Danilovic Preview

Olga Danilovic is fit and firing and is coming off a runner-up finish in Rouen this past week where she lost to Elina Svitolina. That defeat brought an end to the Serbian’s nine-match winning streak which included a title win at the WTA 125K tournament in Antalya.

This has been Danilovic’s best season in a while. She has won 13 of 19 matches with the highlight so far being the round of 16 finish at the Australian Open in January where she defeated Liudmila Samsonova and Jessica Pegula. Although she could not sustain that good from post-Melbourne, Danilovic did enough to secure a top 40 spot in the rankings for the first time. This will be her second main draw appearance in Madrid. Last year, she reached the second round from qualifying.

Victoria Azarenka vs Olga Danilovic Head-To-Head

Azarenka and Danilovic have never played at any level. This will be their first collision.

Victoria Azarenka vs Olga Danilovic Prediction

Azarenka is one of the legendary names in the sport, but she’s not a world-beater anymore. She’ll soon turn 36 and her footspeed is quickly decelerating. She’s an aggressive ball striker and has won 21 WTA titles, but only one of those was on clay where her comfort level has never been elite. That said, I think Danilovic offers great value to win this match in straight sets. Azarenka hasn’t played since Miami because of that freak shoulder injury and I expect her to struggle to deal with the Serbian’s pacey and powerful shots. Altitude conditions also expose movement limitations and Azarenka’s rally tolerance is hardly her strength anymore. I’d be stunned if Danilovic fell here.

Nur Said's Pick: Olga Danilovic in straight sets
