Belinda Bencic won a dramatic three-set quarterfinal against Karolina Muchova, which was played for three hours. Muchova won the first set 6-3 in 47 minutes, and the Czech broke early in the second set and led 5-3 at one point. Muchova served for the match at 5-4 but was foiled on her first attempt.

Bencic broke twice to snatch the set 7-5. After both players exchanged breaks at the start of the third set, Muchova broke decisively for a 5-4 lead. She served for the match and held a match point, but could not convert. Bencic broke Muchova twice to win the set and match after three hours and 5 minutes. 

Bencic hit 3 aces and 4 double faults. She landed 73% of first serves in play and won 61% of first serve points (49/80). Bencic won 53% of second serve points (16/30) and saved six of 11 break points in the match. This is her first semifinal in Tokyo since 2015, when she won the tournament.

Sofia Kenin is also coming off a rollercoaster three-set win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. It’s a win that propels Kenin to her second successive semifinal in Tokyo after reaching the final last year. Kenin was flawless in the first set, where she handed Alexandrova a rare bagel in 21 minutes. But the Russian hit back to take the second set 6-2.

Alexandrova led 5-2 in the third set and had four match points – one on her own serve – but could not take any. Kenin’s patience and grit paid off as she managed to take the match into a final set tiebreak, which she won 7-3.
