Taylor Fritz extended his excellent track record against Alexander Zverev. Fritz became the first player to defeat the German since he captured his first Grand Slam at the French Open. For the seventh time in succession, Fritz got the better of Zverev, and this time, beating him on German soil at the Halle Open to reach the finals.
The match lasted two hours and 39 minutes, taking Fritz’s time spent on the court in the past two matches well clear of the five hour mark, having needed over two hours and 45 minutes to defeat Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. Fritz saw off Zverev 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 and now leads their head-to-head 10-5. He fired 19 aces and won 87% of first serve points. Half of Fritz’s 10 ATP titles have been won on grass courts. Frances Tiafoe will be the other finalist. The 28-year-old easily defeated Daniel Altmaier in the second semifinal at the Halle Open. Tiafoe dropped just four games in a clinical performance. It’s his second ATP 500 final of the season (he lost to Flavio Cobolli in Acapulco). Before this round, Tiafoe had beaten Cobolli, Shimabukuro and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

I didn’t give Fritz much of a chance against Zverev in the Halle Open quarterfinal and he was simply superb as he continued to torment the German, making it 7 wins in a row in their rivalry. That said, whoever Fritz was going to draw in the bottom half, he would be the favorite in the final. Still, I think Tiafoe is worthy of consideration for taking at least a set in this match. He has quietly built something special this week, beating Roland Garros finalist Flavio Cobolli and then saving match points to knock out Auger-Aliassime.
