Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko meet in the first round of the Swiss Open in Gstaad. The match is scheduled for Monday, July 14. Here’s our Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko prediction. This preview will also include a Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko pick.

Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko Preview
Stan Wawrinka is competing in his 16th tournament of the season. The three-time Grand Slam champion is ranked outside the Top 150. He will play in Gstaad for the 13th time. Wawrinka reached the final back in 2005 and lost to former French Open champion Gaston Gaudio. Last year, Wawrinka lost in the opening round of his home tournament to Lukas Klein in three sets.

Wawrinka is having a disappointing season. He has lost 15 matches and won just 11. He was on a five-match losing streak in the last couple of months, until he turned up at the Iasi Challenger this week and made the semifinals. Ten of his 11 wins this season have come on clay. Wawrinka didn’t qualify for Wimbledon based on his current ranking and was not offered a wild card into the tournament. In fact, after Roland Garros, he played clay-court tennis at the Challenger level in preparation for this short clay swing after the grass-court season. Wawrinka’s best result this year was reaching the final of the Aix-en-Provence Challenger in early May. He lost to Borna Coric in three sets. His last ATP title was eight years ago in Geneva.

Alexander Shevchenko is ranked 98th in the ATP rankings. He is a former Top 50 player. The Kazakhstani will be playing in Gstaad for the first time. But Shevchenko is extremely experienced on clay with a 193-123 lifetime record on the surface. He won two of his three ATP Challenger titles on clay.

Shevchenko has played two competitive matches on grass in the last three weeks. He lost in qualifying to Elias Ymer in Mallorca and was knocked out in the opening round of the Wimbledon main draw by Reilly Opelka. Before that, Shevchenko had played clay-court tennis for almost three months. He has posted a 16-14 record on clay this year. His best result was reaching the semifinals of the Bratislava Challenger in mid-June. He entered the French Open main draw as a lucky loser and upset Dusan Lajovic in the first round. Shevchenko lost in the subsequent round to Ethan Quinn.

Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko Head-To-Head
Shevchenko and Wawrinka have played once on the ATP Tour. The 24-year-old stunned the Swiss in straight sets at the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.

Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko Prediction
Wawrinka has momentum after his recent semifinal finish in Iasi, but the Swiss’ mobility is becoming a serious concern when he has to play in back-to-back weeks. I don’t expect Shevchenko to encounter too many difficulties making the transition from grass to clay. This is a natural surface for him, and he is a grinder who will out-rally Wawrinka.

Nur Said's Pick: Alexander Shevchenko in three sets
