Serena Williams’ comeback is easily the biggest headline in the 2026 tennis season. It started as a rumor when Serena’s name was published in the anti-doping testing pool at the back end of last year and the American legend was given the all clear earlier this year to resume competition.
Williams made her return as a wild card and played her first match in four years at Queen’s Club in doubles alongside Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko. The pair were victorious in their opening match, but that partnership did not last as Mboko injured her knee during her singles at the same event. Williams then partnered Karolina Muchova in Berlin, but lost in the first round. Now 44, the 23-time major champion accepted a wild card in both singles and doubles at this year’s Wimbledon.
Maya Joint is ranked 53rd in the WTA rankings. She is a former Top 30 player. This is her second Wimbledon main draw appearance. Last year, she lost in the first round to Liudmila Samsonova. Joint has won just 3 matches in 2026 and lost 15 times. She has a lifetime record of 9-6 on grass courts, but owns a WTA title on the surface (won 2025 Eastbourne).

It’s almost unbelievable writing this, but it is happening. Serena Williams is playing her first singles match in nearly four years and it is on the hallowed stage at Wimbledon. She is a plus-money underdog here, which is understandable. Her opponent, Maya Joint is ranked in the top 60 and owns one grass-court title in her young career. But the Aussie is on a wretched run of form this year and she’s about to face one of the icons of this sport on Centre Court. Dealing with the occasion, the stage, and a partisan crowd that will naturally cheer for Serena can be a significant challenge. If I’m going for a pick rather than power rating, I have to side with Serena. Grass can compensate for rust and diminished movement even after such a long absence.
