Marketa Vondrousova vs Marta Kostyuk Preview
Marketa Vondrousova is currently ranked 63rd in the WTA rankings, making only her second career appearance in Canada. Her previous visit was also in Montreal, where she reached the round of 16 and lost to Coco Gauff.
This week, the former Wimbledon champion picked up her third win in this tournament after toppling the rising Filipina star Alexandra Eala in three sets. In her first match since losing to Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon, Vondrousova was slow off the blocks, losing the first set 6-3 in 43 minutes. She dropped her serve twice after going ahead on the scoreboard to begin the match.
But the Czech lefty dominated proceedings shortly after, breaking Eala’s serve four times in the next two sets to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in two hours and seven minutes. Vondrousova hit seven aces during the match but will hope to cut down on the 10 double faults she compiled. She won 79% of first serve points (44/56) and saved nine of 11 break points.
Marta Kostyuk is seeded at No. 24 in this year’s Canadian Open in Montreal. Kostyuk is ranked 28th in the WTA rankings and will look to cement her Top 32 seeding spot for the US Open. This will be Kostyuk’s third appearance in this WTA 1000 tournament. Her first visit in 2023 ended in a first-round defeat to Qinwen Zheng. Last year, she made the last 16 and lost to Emma Navarro in straight sets. After a great 2024 in which she won her first WTA title, Kostyuk is a disappointing 17-16 this season and, worryingly, has lost six matches in a row.

I’m leaning Vondrousova in this one. Kostyuk’s slump is concerning. Six defeats in a row is arguably her worst sequence of results in her career, and she has recorded some crushing losses in that run in matches she was slated as the heavy favorite. Vondrousova’s turnaround against Eala makes her primed to add to Kostyuk’s woes in this match.
