Madison Keys has powered to her first WTA final of the season at the Eastbourne Open without dropping a set. Keys only needed to complete a set in the semifinal against Petra Marcinko and the Croatian retired from the match because of an abdominal injury, thereby giving Keys direct passage into the final.
Before the semifinals, Keys recorded emphatic wins over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and compatriot McCartney Kessler. She improves to 6-1 this swing. Her only loss came in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open against Jessica Pegula. Keys has picked up three grass-court titles at WTA level, with two of those in Eastbourne.

For Maria, it is a welcome return to another grass-court final. The German has not lost a set and began the week with a massive win over Jasmine Paolini. At this point, we almost have to stop asking whether Tatjana Maria can do this and accept that grass completely transforms her into a totally different player. Her style is a rhythm-breaker and a very effective weapon on this surface. But I’m still siding with Keys. Her record in Eastbourne includes two title runs and she’s seeing the ball exceptionally well this week. And if she is not lured to overhit (which is the case against Maria), and plays with controlled aggression, I don’t see the American letting this final slip away.
