Eva Lys will be Germany’s No. 1 WTA player at this year’s United Cup. This will be her first participation. Lys returns to the country that pretty much paved the way for her breakthrough season 12 months ago. She was granted a late, lucky loser entry at the Australian Open after losing in the qualifying rounds and she went all the way to the fourth round stage in Melbourne before bowing out to World No. 2 Iga Swiatek.
Lys went on to achieve some big scalps, with her incredible win over Elena Rybakina at the China Open undoubtedly being her best. She broke the top 50 for the first time after reaching the Beijing quarterfinals, and settled at No. 40 in the year-end rankings. Lys will have a confrontation with Swiatek on Australian soil as Germany and Poland are placed in the same group in Sydney, but she must first face rising Dutch star Suzan Lamens.
Suzan Lamens is also set for her debut at the 2026 United Cup, joining experienced ATP player Tallon Griekspoor in the Dutch team. The Netherlands are making its second appearance in this competition, having been narrowly close to making the last eight back in 2024 only to be miss out because of the games-won ratio.
This time, the Dutch are placed in a tough-looking group against 2024 champions Germany and two-time finalists Poland. Lamens is coming off a 2025 season that didn’t quite hit the heights of 2024 when she won her first WTA title in Osaka, but still accumulated plenty of tour-level experience and was involved in some entertaining matches against tour regulars.

I’ll go with the upset here as Lamens has a serious chance of getting the Netherlands a point in this tie. At first glance, ranking doesn’t quite help Lamens, but she still has a higher ceiling than 89th, provided she can sort her inconsistencies and match management. Moreover, Lys can drift into passive stretches and matches can unexpectedly tighten. I think Lamens is the sharper value lean in this one.
