Number 7 seed Leylah Fernandez will face Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in the second round of the 2025 Monterrey Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, August 20. Here’s our Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Sramkova prediction. This preview will also include a Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Sramkova pick.

Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Sramkova Preview

Leylah Fernandez is the No. 7 seed in Monterrey. This will be her fourth appearance in this WTA 500 event. Fernandez has not lost in Monterrey before the quarterfinals. She lost in the last eight on her debut appearance five years ago, but won the title in each of her last two visits in 2021 and 2022. She hasn’t returned to Monterrey until this week, where she will look to win her third title there.

Fernandez started the tournament with a solid win against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian and bouncing back from two successive losses in Montreal and Cincinnati. The Canadian completed the victory in two sets and in under two hours. Fernandez hit three aces and one double fault in the victory. She landed 70% of first serves in play and won 87% of first serve points (33/38). Fernandez won 69% of second serve points (11/16) and did not face a break point in the match. It was her first win since she lifted the Washington title at the end of July. Fernandez is now 16-10 on hard courts this season.

Rebecca Sramkova was imperious in knocking out home wild card Victoria Rodriguez in straight sets, with the match lasting precisely an hour. Sramkova won the first set 6-0 in 23 minutes, breaking serve three times. After saving a couple of break points in the opening game of the second et, Sramkova broke Rodriguez to lead 3-1. And she saved another crucial break point to consolidate for 4-2. Sramkova would only give away one more game to the Mexican before wrapping up a routine 6-0, 6-3 win.

In the victory, Sramkova hit seven aces and two double faults. She landed 76% of first serves in play and won 74% of first serve points (28/38). Sramkova won 58% of second serve points (7/12) and saved all four break points she faced. Sramkova is now 9-12 on hard courts, which is a far cry from her career-best season in 2024 (23-11).

Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Sramkova Head-To-Head

Fernandez and Sramkova have never met before this.

Leylah Fernandez vs Rebecca Sramkova Prediction

There is great value with the Sramkova set handicap, which means she only needs to win a set. The Slovakian is a massive striker of a ball and takes big cuts on the return. Fernandez’s lefty sliced serve and court coverage are exceptional, but she is not prone to losing her focus and has given away sets so cheaply this season. This could get scrappy, which is what the Canadian loves as she can force the errors out of the Slovak, but Sramkova might be good value to steal one set.

Nur Said's Pick: Rebecca Sramkova set handicap +1.5
