Jasmine Paolini is the number seven seed at the Cincinnati Open and is through to her first semifinal in this tournament. Paolini overcame second seed Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals. The match took 27 games to decide and lasted two hours. Gauff played well in the first set, breaking Paolini’s serve three times to mask her six double faults, but her level became increasingly worse in the next two sets to cede all the momentum and lose the match.
Paolini won a topsy-turvy second set to level the match and then a little more composed than the American in the deciding set to pick up her third successive win over Gauff this season. Gauff hit 16 double faults in total in the whole match, and Paolini broke her serve seven times. Paolini is now 16-7 on hard courts and will look to reach her second final of the season. She won her second WTA 1000 of her career in Rome in May.
Veronika Kudermetova has emerged as the surprise contender for a final spot in Cincinnati in her quarter of the draw. The big-hitting Russian ended the inspired run of French qualifier Varvara Gracheva in the quarterfinals. Kudermetova was at her free-flowing best as she demolished Gracheva 6-1, 6-2 in just 65 minutes.
Kudermetova hit four aces in the match and landed 57% of first serves in play. She won 71% of first serve points (15/21). Kudermetova won 81% of second serve points (13/16) and did not face a break point in the match. Kudermetova has accounted for some major scalps in the first week, knocking out in-form Belinda Bencic and Clara Tauson. She has won seven of her last eight matches this swing. This is officially her best run in the tournament.

I’m giving Kudermetova the edge here as she can steamroll through her service games, something Coco Gauff didn’t do consistently in what was an error-strewn quarterfinal between her and Paolini. Kudermetova has also played better tennis. She’s been gusty under pressure and clinical when chances presented themselves. Almost every season, she has that one tournament where she flourishes, and she looks almost unstoppable. This could be one of those weeks, and I like Kudermetova to sneak her way into a WTA 1000 final.
