Jannik Sinner’s first match against talented Brazilian star Joao Fonseca was certainly one of the most exciting and the World No. 2 emerged victorious in a thrilling bout. Sinner and Fonseca traded heavy forehands throughout the match, and the Italian saved three set points in the first set tiebreak to prevail and take the lead. Sinner got the first break in the second set, but failed to serve out the match at 5-4, and quickly regained his intensity to power through the tiebreak again and seal a straight-sets win.Sinner hit 37 winners to 21 unforced errors in the match. Learner Tien is the last American man standing in Indian Wells. The 25th seed bravely defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to secure his spot in the quarterfinals for the first time, a run that takes him up to 21st in the live rankings. Tien rallied from a set down and saved two match points to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in two hours and 10 minutes. He’s the youngest US man to make the Indian Wells last eight since his coach, Michael Chang, back in 1992, who went on to win the title.
Tien hit 39 winners and 42 unforced errors in the victory. That included 10 aces and 4 double faults. Tien landed 61% of first serves in play and won 72% of first serve points (50/69). Tien won 51% of second serve points (23/45) and saved four of five break points in the match.
