Janice Tjen vs Rakotomanga Rajaonah Preview
Janice Tjen will play in her first WTA final this Sunday. This is only her first tour-level tournament outside a Grand Slam. And Tjen had written her name in the history books as only the third Indonesian to reach a WTA final in the Open Era. Before this week, Tjen was already having an outstanding season on the lower tiers, winning 45 of 50 matches on the pro tour and bagging six ITF titles.Tjen was particularly impressive in qualifying for her first major at the US Open, where she stunned Veronika Kudermetova in the main draw before losing to Emma Raducanu in the second round. But she’s not been demoralized by that loss and has been in a rich vein of form at the WTA 250 in Sao Paulo, winning each of her matches in straight sets. That included some notable wins over Alexandra Eala in the quarters and Francesca Jones in the semis. This will be her 10th final this season, but her first on the WTA tour.
Also competing in her first WTA final is Rakotomanga Rajaonah. The Frenchwoman has been a handful this week as she motored to the final, losing only a set. That was in the opening round against Ana Sofia Sanchez. Since then, she’s completed massive wins as a +200 underdog against Panna Udvardy and, perhaps more impressively, Renata Zarazua in the semifinal.
Rakotomanga Rajaonah has a 33-18 record this season in all tournaments, but with little hard-court form before this week. While she’s been dominant on clay, Rakotomanga Rajaonah is proving she’s not a one-trick pony and has guaranteed herself a Top 150 debut.
