Iva Jovic is competing in her maiden main draw in Cleveland. The 17-year-old is coming off a solid straight-sets win against Anastasia Potapova. The match took 21 games to decide. Jovic led on two occasions in the opening set, but could not consolidate her advantage and gave away the break back. But with Potapova serving to stay in the set in the 12th game, the young American broke her serve for the third time to win the set 7-5.
The pattern was the same in the early goings of the second set as both players broke each other twice, until Jovic got the decisive break in the eighth game of the set. She would serve for the match by fending off a late break back point and converting her second match point. Jovic did not account for any aces but compiled four double faults. She landed 49% of first serves in play and won 58% of first serve points (22/38). Jovic won 56% of second serve points (22/39). She saved seven of 11 break points in the match. Jovic will seek her 30th match win in all competitions when she faces Ann Li.
Ann Li defeated Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva in straight sets to reach the second round in Cleveland. The match took 21 games to decide and lasted seven minutes shy of two hours. Li recovered from a break down twice in the first set before breaking Starodubtseva towards the end of the set to win it 7-5. She broke Starodubtseva twice in the second set to ease to victory.
Li finished the match with four aces and two double faults. She landed 54% of first serves in play and won 73% of first serve points (27/37). Li won 45% of second serve points (14/31) and faced three break points. This was her 20th win in 39 matches this season. Li reached her third quarterfinal of the season last month in Prague.

Li has so much experience and is one of the toughest grinders out there, but she lacks a cutting edge most of the time, and I fancy Jovic’s attacking game to shine here.
