Iga Swiatek vs Sorana Cirstea Preview
Iga Swiatek is the top seed at this week’s Korea Open in Seoul. It is her first appearance at this WTA 500 event, although Swiatek has competed in Asia before and owns one title win in this swing. Swiatek is coming off another great season, which she added to her Grand Slam collection by winning the Wimbledon title in July. The Pole won her second title of the season in Cincinnati and was on a nine-match winning streak at the US Open before she lost to Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals. Overall, Swiatek is 53-13 for the season. She is back in the top two, replacing Coco Gauff as the World No. 2. But Swiatek can cut Aryna Sabalenka’s lead at the top if she wins the tournament. Because she is the top seed, Swiatek received a bye in the opening round.
Sorana Cirstea kicked off the tournament in Seoul with a first-round win over lucky loser Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets. The match took 16 games to decide and lasted an hour and 13 minutes. Cirstea hit two aces and one double fault in the victory.
The Romanian landed 64% of first serves in play and won 75% of first serve points (24/32). Cirstea won 50% of second serve points (9/18) and saved three of four break points. Cirstea is competing in her third edition of the Korea Open. She was a quarterfinalist during her last appearance in 2017. Cirstea improves to 23-15 for the season. She has won 12 of her last 14 matches. One of those two defeats was inflicted by Iga Swiatek.
