Frances Tiafoe shocked former champion Daniil Medvedev in the last round to reach the US Open quarterfinals for the fourth time. The match took 36 games to decide. Tiafoe won the first set in a tiebreak after an hour and 14 minutes. Medvedev served for the set at 6-5 up, but was broken back. Tiafoe secured a priceless break early in the second set and consolidated that lead for the remainder of the set before sealing it 6-4. Alex Michelsen is through to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal thanks to a straight sets win over Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Despite the perfunctory scoreline, Michelsen had to work for the victory, in almost three hours of play. He saved two set points in the first-set tiebreak and prevailed 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
