Emma Raducanu vs Anna Kalinskaya Preview
Emma Raducanu has reached her first WTA semifinal of the season at the Citi Open. Competing in the District of Columbia for the third time in her career, Raducanu had stumbled at the quarterfinal stage twice in this tournament. But she has achieved a career first by reaching the last four unexpectedly.
The British No. 1 had a tough draw, but navigated it successfully. In the first round, she won a gritty contest against Marta Kostyuk, where she survived a 72-minute first set before prevailing 7-6, 6-4. That set up a showdown against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Raducanu toppled the Japanese star in straight sets, serving superbly throughout the match and saving two break points which she faced to win 6-4, 6-2 in 81 minutes. She met an unexpected quarterfinalist in Maria Sakkari.
Raducanu recovered from an early break to win the opening set 6-4. She trailed 2-5 in the second set, but won five games on the trot to complete a straight sets victory in two hours and six minutes. Raducanu has a 1-2 record in semifinal matches. The only time she progressed in this stage of a tournament was during that historic run at the 2021 US Open. She is guaranteed a return to the Top 30 thanks to this wonderful run in Washington.
Anna Kalinskaya is also back in the semifinal of a WTA tournament with the Russian star overcoming a spate of injuries this season to enjoy a productive week in Washington. The World No. 48 is coming off a high-quality straight-sets win over Clara Tauson, which took an hour and 37 minutes. Kalinskaya was the better player in the match, taking a 5-2 lead by breaking Tauson twice in the opening set. Although she relinquished her serve once, she broke Tauson in the ninth game to seal the set.
The second set was competitive with Tauson preventing Kalinsjaya from serving for the match at 5-4, but the Dane’s comeback never materialized. Kalinskaya got the decisive break in the 12th game to win 6-3, 7-5. She finished the match with four aces and six double faults. Kalinskaya landed 64% of first serves in play and won 69% of first serve points (27/39). She won 45% of second serve points (10/22) and saved three of six break points. This will be her first semifinal since January. Like Raducanu, she has yet to drop a set this week.

Emma Raducanu vs Anna Kalinskaya Prediction
I’m torn here, but I think Raducanu has played the better tennis this week and against players with a better average ranking than Kalinskaya. For a few years, when Raducanu goes on a run, it ends up being a false dawn, but I believe she’s piecing together something special here in Washington. And that all stemmed from a very good performance against Sabalenka at Wimbledon, where she lost. She’s built on that and is reaping the fruits of her labor. She doesn’t convert many semifinals, but I reckon she’ll have enough to outsmart Kalinskaya.
