World No. 8 Elina Svitolina faces German World No. 80 Eva Lys in the Round of 16 at the Berlin Open. The match is scheduled for Thursday, June 18. This will be their second meeting of 2026, having just played each other on clay in Stuttgart. Will Svitolina reach her ninth quarterfinal of the season? Or will Lys complete the upset and reach her first quarterfinal of the season? Here’s our preview and prediction of Elina Svitolina vs Eva Lys. This preview will also include an Elina Svitolina vs Eva Lys pick.
Elina Svitolina vs Eva Lys Preview
Elina Svitolina kicked off the Berlin Open with a retirement win against Anna Kalinskaya. The Ukrainian took the first set 6-1 in 18 minutes, with Kalinskaya clearly out of the race. The Russian’s fitness troubles compounded in the second set as Svitolina led with a double break and Kalinskaya retired down 1-4 in the second set. Svitolina, therefore, progresses into the last 16 in Berlin for a second time. In her only visit back in 2021, she lost at this stage to Ekaterina Alexandrova. This was her first match since losing to compatriot Marta Kostyuk in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
Eva Lys beat Poland’s Magdalena Frech for her first ever win at the Berlin Open. Lys completed a straight sets victory in just over two hours of play. The match took 22 games to decide. Lys won the first set in a tiebreak after an hour and 23 minutes, although she needed eight set points to clinch an absorbing set. At the start of the second set, Lys broke Frech’s serve at least three times, although the Pole managed to reduce the deficit with two breaks of her own, the German managed a late break in the ninth game to round off a 7-6, 6-3 win.
Lys landed 65% of first serves in play and won 68% of first serve points (38/56). Lys won 37% of second serve points (11/30) and saved six out of 10 break points she faced on serve. This was her first match win since beating Petra Marcinko in the first round of Roland Garros.
Elina Svitolina vs Eva Lys Head-To-Head
Svitolina and Lys have played each other once on the WTA Tour. They faced off at the 2026 Stuttgart Open on the indoor clay. Svitolina thrashed Lys 6-1, 6-0. Lys is playing her 15th match of the season here at the Berlin Open, while Svitolina will play her 43rd for the season, having posted an outstanding 42-8 record.
Elina Svitolina vs Eva Lys Prediction
Svitolina was in cruise control by the time Kalinskaya retired from their match. The Ukrainian couldn’t have asked for a better start in the grass swing. Lys earned a big win over Frech, just her eighth ever on grass at the pro level. But it’s hard to back the German on the back of what has been a very poor season. Lys has not won back-to-back matches this year and I don’t think she’s got the weight of shot to hit through Svitolina. Svitolina thumped Lys 6-1, 6-0 in their last match in Stuttgart and grass gives the Ukrainian more room to overpower Lys and progress into her ninth quarterfinal of the season at the Berlin Open.
