Elena Rybakina reached the Miami Open quarterfinals with a straight sets win over Australian World No. 68 Talia Gibson. The match took 16 games to decide. Rybakina easily beat Gibson 6-2, 6-2 in just 66 minutes to secure her spot in the last eight and remains in the hunt to win her second title.In the victory, Rybakina hammered eight aces and did not account for any double faults. Rybakina landed 73% of first serves in play and won 84% of first serve points (27/32). She won 50% of second serve points (6/12) and only faced one break point in the match, which she erased. Before this, Rybakina had beaten countrywoman Yulia Putintseva and Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, both in straight sets. Rybakina has reached the Miami Open final in two of the last three editions.
Jessica Pegula continued her fine run of form on hard courts as she reached her fifth straight quarterfinal this season. Pegula defeated Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1 in 68 minutes to progress. Only one break was the difference between them in the opening set, and Pegula was the first to break Cristian and she did not relinquish that lead.
In the second set, Cristian’s level dipped as Pegula played some superb offensive tennis to break serve three times. Pegula finished the match with six aces on the board. She landed 62% of first serves in play and won 83% of first serve points (20/24). Pegula won 80% of second serve points (12/15) and did not face a break point. Before this, Pegula had beaten Francisca Jones and Leylah Fernandez without the loss of a set.
