Ninth seed Elena Rybakina will face American World No. 50 Hailey Baptiste in the second round of the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29. Here’s our Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste prediction. This preview will also include an Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste pick.

Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste Preview

Elena Rybakina is a top 10 seed in Montreal. The Kazakh is returning to Canada for the first time since 2023, when she made the semifinals – her best result in this tournament to date. Rybakina is currently ranked 12th in the WTA rankings and is nine spots below her career-high of No. 3.

Rybakina has compiled a 33-14 record in 2025. She has won 17 matches on hard courts. Last week, Rybakina reached her third hard-court semifinal of the season in Washington and was unfortunate to lose an epic match against eventual champion Leylah Fernandez. The earliest loss that Rybakina has suffered this year was in Miami when she was knocked out in the second round by Ashlyn Krueger. It will be an American standing in her way in her opening match this week at the Canadian Open.

Hailey Baptiste is unseeded, and she is ranked in the Top 50. This will be her first appearance in Canada. She kicked this summer’s hard-court swing in her home tournament in Washington this past week, where she lost in the opening round to Sofia Kenin. But the American has since picked up her first win since Wimbledon in her debut match in Montreal.

Baptiste beat fellow American Whitney Osuigwe in straight sets. The match took 19 games to decide and lasted an hour and 27 minutes. The first set featured seven breaks of serve. Baptiste recovered from a slow start in which she trailed 1-4 but ended up winning six of the next seven games. In the second set, the World No. 50 broke serve three times to complete a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Baptiste finished the match with three aces and four double faults. She won 65% of first serve points (22/34) and saved four of eight break points.

Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste Head-To-Head

Rybakina and Baptiste have no previous history. This second-round match in Montreal will be their first career meeting.

Elena Rybakina vs Hailey Baptiste Prediction

This is a match I expect Rybakina to dominate with her first-strike tennis and for Baptiste to scramble for every ball. Barring a recurring capitulation from Washington (where she had the match on her racket against Fernandez), expect business as usual for Rybakina, who is searching for her 34th match win of the season.

Nur Said's Pick: Under 21.5 games in the match
