Dayana Yastremska and Jule Niemeier meet in the first round of the 2025 Hamburg Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16. Here’s our Dayana Yastremska vs Jule Niemeier prediction. This preview will also include a Dayana Yastremska vs Jule Niemeier pick.
Dayana Yastremska vs Jule Niemeier Preview
Dayana Yastremska is ranked 39th in the WTA rankings and will be competing in her first tournament since Wimbledon. Yastremska has entered the main draw in Hamburg for a second time. Her previous appearance in this event was in 2021 when she reached the semifinals and lost to Arantxa Rus. Yastremska is a three-time WTA champion. She won one of those titles on clay in Strasbourg, but that was six years ago. The Ukrainian has compiled a 25-15 record this season and sealed her return into the Top 40 thanks to a third-round finish at Wimbledon.
Yastremska caused one of the shocks of the tournament in London when she upset French Open champion Coco Gauff in the opening round. She finished with an 8-3 record on grass, reaching a final in Nottingham and the quarterfinals of Eastbourne. She will be hoping to translate that success on clay, after only winning five of nine matches earlier this year. Her first stop in Germany was in Stuttgart, but she didn’t have a great result there as she was eliminated in the first round of the main draw by Jelena Ostapenko (retired 0-3 down in the second set). She will open up against a home player in her first match at the Hamburg Open.
Jule Niemeier is ranked 184th in the WTA rankings. Less than a year ago, she was ranked inside the Top 70, but a disappointing start to 2025 has seen Niemeier’s ranking fall to three digits. It was clear the German needed to wipe the slate clean and start afresh. And she’s done so, parting ways with longtime coach Michael Geserer and appointing Anna Gabric to take over the reins of her coaching team. Niemeier has won just nine matches in the first six and a half months of the season, with the most disappointing results coming at her last two Grand Slams. Niemeier lost in qualifying at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Her only major main draw appearance was at the Australian Open, and there, she was knocked out resoundingly by Marta Kostyuk in the second round.
Last week, Niemeier was in action at the Bastad 125K in Sweden and lost in the second round to Lucia Bronzetti. She can draw plenty of inspiration for her previous Tour level win which came in April on home soil in Stuttgart, outlasting countrywoman Laura Siegemund in three sets. This will be her third career appearance at the Hamburg Open. Niemeier reached the semis in 2021, and was a quarterfinalist on her last visit in 2023.
Dayana Yastremska vs Jule Niemeier Head-To-Head
Yastremska and Niemeier have met once on the Tour level. Niemeier won that meeting at the 2024 US Open in three sets. This will be their first meeting on clay courts.
Dayana Yastremska vs Jule Niemeier Prediction
Yastremska starts as the favorite with the books, but Niemeier is not to be underestimated here. Admittedly, Niemeier has had a disappointing year, but the appointment of a new coach and returning to home soil might just be the lift she needs to get over this hump. Additionally, Yastremska is extremely inconsistent and she hasn’t played on clay after Wimbledon, something Niemeier has already done this past week at the 125k level. These are massive odds the books are throwing at Niemeier, who can power her way to a shock win.
