Daniil Medvedev’s inauspicious start to the season continued in Marseille. The former World No. 1 lost to Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic in the semis. The ATP 250 event in France offered Medvedev the opportunity to regain his mojo, but failure to win the title only compounds his misery.

So far in 2025, Medvedev has played three tournaments with the Marseille run being his best. He was knocked out in the second round of the Australian Open by Next Gen star Learner Tien in five sets.

His other tournament appearance came in Rotterdam at the start of February. And there, he fell to another early exit at the hands of Mattia Bellucci.

Karen Khachanov Preview

Karen Khachanov is unseeded at this year’s Qatar Open. That shows the depth of the men’s field in Doha. The defending champion has posted two wins in 2025. 

Both wins came at the Australian Open in his run to the third round. Khachanov was beaten at the first hurdle in Hong Kong and more recently in Marseille to Medjedovic. Those defeats sandwich his best result from Melbourne.

Khachanov is currently ranked 21st in the ATP rankings and is a winner of seven Tour-level titles. This will be his fifth appearance in Doha.

I’m taking Khachanov here. I think it’s the most sensible thing to do. Medvedev is having a nightmare start to the season. His dip in form is clearly impacting his ironclad return. This is a player whose confidence is on the floor right now. Khachanov’s own start to the year is far from rosy with three defeats in five matches, but I would trust him to flip the switch. Not even the most confident prognosticator wants to predict this match between two struggling top players, so you follow where the value is.
