Coco Gauff vs Mirra Andreeva Preview
Coco Gauff beat fellow American Iva Jovic in three sets in the last round to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals in Rome. Just like in her previous match, Gauff dropped the opening set 7-5 after getting broken in the 12th game. Jovic served for the match in the second set and had a match point on serve at 5-3, but failed to see out the match. Gauff broke back and then held in her next game to put the pressure back on Jovic. The young American failed to hold serve for a second time and Gauff broke. The two-time Grand Slam champion served to level and duly did so to force a third set. There were breaks galore in the third set, but it was Gauff who landed the telling blow as she broke Jovic twice from 3-2 up and held to love while serving for the match. Overall, Gauff landed 67% of first serves in play and won 60% of first serve points (37/62). Gauff won 48% of second serve points (15/31) and saved four of 10 break points on serve. Gauff improves to 6-2 for the season as she looks to win her first title in Rome.
Mirra Andreeva had a much more comfortable afternoon as she knocked out World No. 22 Elise Mertens in straight sets to reach the Rome quarterfinals for the second year in a row. The match took 18 games to decide. Andreeva prevailed 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes.
In the victory, Andreeva hit 4 aces and 3 double faults. Andreeva landed 71% of first serves in play and won 68% of first serve points (27/40). Andreeva won 63% of second serve points (10/16) and saved four of five break points in the match. Andreeva improves to 15-2 on clay this season. She is hunting her second title this swing after winning in Linz.
