Nishesh Basavareddy vs Justin Engel Preview
Nishesh Basavareddy is coming off a straight-sets loss to Alexander Blockx in the last match. Basavareddy had three set points in the second set tiebreak but couldn’t convert any and suffered a potentially damaging defeat that puts his qualification hopes in danger.
In the defeat to Blockx, Basavareddy hit 2 aces and 5 double faults. Basavareddy landed 60% of first serves in play and won 71% of first serve points (25/35). He won 43% of second serve points (10/23) and saved one of three break points. Basavareddy won his opening match against Dino Prizmic, which means he’s still got a lifeline in this group. He needs to beat Engel and hope Prizmic doesn’t defeat Blockx 3-0 in order to qualify for the semis.
Justin Engel has lost both of his opening two matches in the group at the Next Gen ATP Finals. The German’s debut appearance in Jeddah started brightly when he won the first set against Blockx, but he has not picked up any wins, leaving him bottom of the group.
Remarkably, Engel still has a slim chance of progressing to the semifinals, but he needs a convincing win over Basavareddy that won’t need a deciding set at all, and must hope Blockx can serve him a favor by knocking out Prizmic in four sets at the very least. Only Blockx has qualified in this group, but the other three players will vie for the second berth.
Nishesh Basavareddy vs Justin Engel Head-To-Head
Basavareddy and Engel have never met at any level before this week.
Nishesh Basavareddy vs Justin Engel Prediction
I’ve got to side with Basavareddy, who has shown a bit of steadiness and has better shot tolerance. His return skills are also an asset, and Engel has just not settled in this tournament despite his right start against Blockx. It would be a shock if the German were to win, let alone sneak into the semis. Give me Basavareddy in four.
