Anhelina Kalinina vs Panna Udvardy Preview
Anhelina Kalinina is ranked 120th in the WTA rankings, which is almost 100 spots below her best career ranking on the WTA Tour. That significant drop was largely because of an undisclosed injury in the second half of last season when she took time off at the start of June and returned to action in early December. She immediately won a tournament on her comeback at the WTA 125K level in Limoges. This season, Kalinina has played 30 matches so far, winning 23 times and losing 7. She’s mostly featured at the 125K level tournaments because of her low ranking and because she can build her confidence and amass as many points in such a short space of time. That decision has paid off as she closes in on a Top 100 return.
Kalinina is up to 120th after making four finals at that level in March, taking two titles in events held in Antalya on clay. She needed to qualify in Linz, but she lost in the second round of qualifying to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. That said, she earned a main draw spot as a lucky loser. This will be her fifth participation at the Linz Open.
Panna Udvardy is coming off a runner-up finish at the Bogota Open in Colombia, where she was a set away from bagging her first title at the WTA level. But she lost in three sets to Marie Bouzkova. Despite missing out on the top prize, Udvardy left Bogota with a new career high ranking of World No. 71 and has entered the Linz Open main draw for the first time.
Udvardy began playing clay-court tennis this season, toward the end of February in Antalya, but didn’t get the results she wanted before she traveled to Bogota and achieved her best-ever result at Tour level. Udvardy is currently 8-8 for the season.
