Zeynep Sonmez reached her first quarterfinal since March. She beat France’s Amandine Monnot in the last round. Once more, the Turk was required to go the distance to secure victory, having also beaten Jimenez Kasintseva in the opening round in three sets.The match against Monnot took 23 games to decide. The first set was the most competitive and lasted 39 minutes, in which Monnot was the only player to break serve in the second game. It was an advantage that the Frenchwoman consolidated before winning the set 6-3 on her fifth set point.
Sonmez managed to restore parity in the second set when she broke Monnot three times and did the same in the third set to wrap up a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory in an hour and 34 minutes. She landed 76% of first serves in play and won 64% of first serve points (32/50). Sonmez saved four of six break points in the match.
Anna-Lena Friedsam, for her part, upset Top 100 player Polina Kudermetova in three sets to reach the Angers quarterfinal for a second time. Friedsam won the first set with the only break in the second game. Despite Kudermetova’s best efforts to rescue the match and level the second set, Friedsam pulled off a stunning comeback in the third set, where she rallied from a break down to win 6-2.
Friedsam hit 10 aces and 1 double fault in the win. She landed 69% of first serves in play and won 67% of first serve points (31/46). Friedsam won 48% of second serve points (10/21) and saved two of six break points.
