Alycia Parks kicked off her title defense with a fine straight-sets win against Gabriela Knutson. The match took 16 games to decide and lasted an hour and 8 minutes. The first set was close and it stayed on serve until the eighth game when Parks broke serve for the first time to lead 5-3. While serving for the set, Parks needed four set points to close it out. In the second set, Parks dropped her serve once, but that didn’t matter as she was able to secure four breaks of her own on return to complete a 6-3, 6-1 win. This was her 11th straight win in the tournament in Angers, where she has lifted the title twice, including last year.Oceane Dodin played just her ninth match of the season but picked up her fifth match win in the opening round in Angers. The Frenchwoman, who is a former top 50 player but currently ranked outside the top 700 because of a long injury hiatus, beat countrywoman Alice Rame in straight sets.
Their match took 19 games to decide. Dodin won the first set 6-3 in 33 minutes with the lone break of serve. Dodin was a break up in the second set, but quickly gave back that advantage at 2-all. In the very next game, Rame failed to hold despite having a game point and Dodin consolidated that break to win the set 6-4. Dodin finished the match with 9 aces to 2 double faults. Dodin landed 71% of first serves in play and won 69% of first serve points (34/49). She won 55% of second serve points (11/20) and saved four of five break points in the match.
