Alexandra Eala vs Magda Linette Preview
Alexandra Eala battled past Laura Siegemund in the last round, coming back from a set down to beat the German 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in three hours and 22 minutes. In the victory, Eala recorded 2 aces and 3 double faults. The Filipina landed 69% of first serves in play and won 72% of first serve points (53/74). Eala won 47% of second serve points (16/34) and saved four of six break points in the match.Eala enjoyed a breakout at last year’s Miami Open when she reached the semifinals with victories over Grand Slam champions Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek. Eala has since climbed to a new career high ranking of World No. 29. But to remain inside the top 30, she will need to at least emulate last year’s run.
Magda Linette recorded one of the shocks of the tournament so far by downing former champion Iga Swiatek. Swiatek had never lost an opening match in a WTA tournament in almost five years, but that record came to an end as Linette produced a remarkable comeback to win in three sets.
Swiatek took the opening set in 34 minutes, playing some flawless tennis. But Linette managed to keep things watertight in the second set and was not broken. Serving to stay in the set at 5-6, it was Swiatek who blinked on serve and handed Linette the set. Linette secured a decisive break in the third set to lead 5-2 and it took her five match points to close out the best win of her career.
