Alexander Zverev vs Flavio Cobolli Preview
Alexander Zverev reached his fourth Grand Slam final with a four-set win over Jakub Mensik in the semifinals of the French Open. Zverev won a tight opening set 7-5 with a late break after an hour and 4 minutes. Zverev dominated the second set to win 6-2. Mensik seemed to be struggling with a neck issue, but the Czech recovered to win the third set, breaking Zverev for the first time en route to clinching the set 6-3. But Zverev cooled off that short-lived comeback with an early break at the start of the fourth set and cruised to the finish line. In the victory, Zverev hit 42 winners and 37 unforced errors. He fired 8 aces and 2 double faults. Zverev landed 75% of first serves in play and won 79% of first serve points (62/78). Zverev won 62% of second serve points (16/26) and saved 3 of 4 break points in the match. Zverev is seeking his first Grand Slam title.
Like Zverev, Flavio Cobolli will also hunt for his first Grand Slam title, but the Italian will play in his very first final in a major. Cobolli was handed a walkover after countryman Matteo Arnaldi pulled out from their semifinal match due to illness. Cobolli later admitted that he was heartbroken that compatriot Arnaldi was unable to play the match, but nonetheless, it is a bittersweet moment for him and he will surely be delighted to be one of two men left on final Sunday at the French Open.
Before the semis, Cobolli had beaten Pellegrino, Yibing Wu, Learner Tien, Zachary Svajda, and perhaps his toughest match so far, in the quarterfinal against Auger-Aliassime, where he battled back from a set down to win.
