Alex De Minaur vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Preview
Alex De Minaur reached his second career final in Washington and first since 2018. The Australian ended the surprise run of French lucky loser and Daniil Medvedev’s conqueror, Corentin Moutet, in the semifinal. De Minaur won in straight sets in an hour and 45 minutes. He clinched the opening set in 56 minutes, breaking Moutet only once. In the second set, De Minaur broke the Frenchman twice in the first three gams and led 5-2, but needed two attempts to finish off the match, doing so with another break to seal a 6-4, 6-3 win. De Minaur hit 20 winners to 33 unforced errors, including 21 UEs from his backhand. He landed 60% of first serves in play and won 74% of first serve points (26/35). De Minaur won 48% of second serve points (11/23) and saved three of five break points. De Minaur picked up wins over Yunchaokete Bu, Jiri Lehecka, and Brandon Nakashima. He has lost one set in the tournament. This will be his second final of 2025. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in Rotterdam. De Minaur’s lone final appearance in DC before this was in 2018 when he lost to Alexander Zverev. He is a nine-time champion on the ATP Tour. De Minaur will return to the world’s Top 10 next week.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina continued his incredible run of results in Washington after scoring a third successive win over an American. Having begun the week with a straight sets win over countryman Jaume Munar, Davidovich Fokina defeated American Next Gen star Learner Tien in his next match to make the last eight. There, he stunned top seed Taylor Fritz in a three-hour quarterfinal, winning 7-5 in the third.
And in the semifinal, he beat World No. 8 Ben Shelton in straight sets. Davidovich Fokina won the first set 6-2 in 28 minutes, breaking Shelton’s serve twice. In the second set, Davidovich Fokina lost his serve for the first time to cede advantage, having broken Shelton in the seventh game. But the Spaniard broke decisively in the 11th game and served for the match to 15. He hit 10 winners and 20 unforced errors. Davidovich Fokina won 78% of first serve points (29/37) and was broken three times. This will be his third final of the season. Fokina lost in Delray to Miomir Kecmanovic, having had match points, and to Tomas Machac in Acapulco. The 26-year-old will make his Top 20 debut after the tournament, but will he capture his first ATP title?
Alex De Minaur vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head-To-Head
De Minaur and Davidovich Fokina have met five times at all levels. Davidovich Fokina leads 3-2. This will be their first meeting since the 2023 Toronto Masters. De Minaur won that match in straight sets.
Alex De Minaur vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Prediction
Davidovich Fokina is having a phenomenal tournament with two massive upsets in the last two rounds against the top two favorites. His intensity knows no bounds, and it’s about time that he converts a great tournament run into a title win. And I think he’ll do it in DC. De Minaur is tough as nails with movement that very few can match, but Fokina is the master tactician with variety that can dull the Aussie’s biggest strength. De Minaur also looked unconvincing in his straight sets win over Moutet, committing an unimpressive high of 20 backhand unforced errors. Fokina’s desperate search fr a first ATP title is likely going to end here.
