Lucia Bronzetti will kick off her clay-court journey at the WTA Charleston Open in preparation for the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros in May. Shuai Zhang is ranked outside the Top 100 at the moment, but she is a former Top 30 player in singles. She is a four-time WTA champion and won her most recent title in Lyon three years ago. Before this week, Zhang had played in three tournaments. She started the season in Australia, competing at the United Cup. She lost her only singles match to Coco Gauff. At the Australian Open, Zhang was knocked out in the second-round stage by Yulia Putintseva. Her third tournament was in Dubai, where she fell in the qualifying rounds. Zhang was successful in qualifying for the Charleston main draw last weekend, beating Bethanie Mattek Sands for a main draw spot after rallying from a set and a break deficit.

Zhang defeated the Italian heavily in Dubai, and the court profile in Charleston isn't too physical for the body. Bronzetti is a player who makes her living grinding every point and frustrating her opponents with her counterpunching skills, but if Zhang can consistently outhit her from the baseline, this might be closer than what the pre-match odds indicate. Don't expect a one-sided victory, so Zhang winning a set here is a value pick.
