The American is 18th in the WTA rankings which is a career high, winning her first WTA 1000 title in Doha last month. Anisimova has notched nine wins against three losses in 2025. She is coming off a straight-sets defeat to compatriot McCartney Kessler in Dubai. 

This will be her sixth main draw in Indian Wells. Her best result includes reaching the round of 16 back in 2018 on debut. Her last appearance was in 2023 when she lost in the second round to Linda Noskova. 

All three defeats that Anisimova has suffered this season have come against players outside the top 40.

Belinda Bencic Preview

Belinda Bencic was given a wild card in the main draw of Indian Wells and started her tournament in the first round. She defeated fellow WTA mother Tatjana Maria in straight sets.

The match took 14 games to decide and lasted an hour and six minutes. In the victory, she hit 18 winners and 12 unforced errors. That tally included three double faults. Bencic landed 62% of first serves in play and won 83% of first serve points (20/24).

The Swiss won 60% of second serve points (9/15) and did not face a break point on her serve. Bencic won 63% of return points (26/41) and broke Maria five times.

Bencic improves to 14-4 for the season. She has won six of her last seven matches since the start of February. Bencic has not advanced past the second round in Indian Wells since 2019.

It's a shame this is only a second round. But it's only a matter of time before we get to see this matchup so late in a tournament. I'm sitting on the fence here. Anisimova won one of the WTA 1000s this past month (Doha), so she'll be confident of getting a result. But Bencic is in excellent form too since returning from her maternity break. She's motored in the rankings (not far from re-entering the top 50) and also bagged a title in the Middle East in February. I reckon we get three sets. It's the least we deserve for a matchup of this stature in the first week of Indian Wells. Going with the overs.
