Kei Nishikori and Jaume Munar meet in the first round of the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Here's our Kei Nishikori vs Jaume Munar prediction. This article will also include a Kei Nishikori vs Jaume Munar pick.
Kei Nishikori Preview
Kei Nishikori returns to Indian Wells for the first time since 2021. Back then he lost in the second round to Dan Evans. His best results at the desert include reaching back-to-back quarterfinals in 2016 and 2017.
Most of Nishikori's career success has come on U.S. soil, winning at least half of his 12 ATP titles in this part of the world. Nishikori is currently ranked 76th in the ATP rankings, which is a long way from his career-high of No. 4.
The Japanese has compiled a 6-5 record in 2025, winning four matches in the first week of the season in Hong Kong. In that tournament, Nishikori reached his first ATP final in six years but lost to an inspired Alexandre Muller in the title match.
But since leaving Hong Kong, Nishikori has lost four of his next six matches including at his most recent tournament in Delray Beach to Mackenzie McDonald.
Nishikori will be competing in his 12th Indian Wells main draw.
Jaume Munar Preview
This has been a very encouraging start to 2025 for Jaume Munar. The Spaniard usually prefers to play on clay where he tends to win most of his matches in a season.
Munar started the year playing in Hong Kong and reached the semis there after beating Davidovich Fokina and Lorenzo Musetti. Despite drawing Casper Ruud at the Australian Open, Munar played very well and pushed the former World No. 2 to five sets in the first round.
Munar came up short in his next tournament in Dallas to Ruud, losing in the semifinal in three sets, despite serving for the match.
He was last in action in the Golden Swing in South America, where he surprisingly played one tournament in Rio de Janeiro. He lost in the second round to Jaime Faria.
Kei Nishikori vs Jaume Munar Head-To-Head
• Nishikori and Munar have met once on Tour.
• Munar defeated Nishikori in three sets in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Genoa Challenger.
Kei Nishikori vs Jaume Munar Prediction
Nishikori's Indian Wells debut goes all the way back to 2008. That's some remarkable longevity and had it not been for long-term injuries, Nishikori was destined to reach the pinnacle of this sport at the peak of his game. He'll still win matches if he continues to stick around, but the days of him getting back to the upper echelons seem out of reach.
Age is not on his side and his body remains fragile when exposed to the regular demands of the tour. It remains to be seen whether the surface change will have the desired impact on clay-loving experts like Jaume Munar. Nonetheless, the Spaniard has enjoyed an upturn in results on hard courts in 2025 and shouldn't be ruled out from dumping out the former US Open finalist.
Nur’s Pick Over 21.5 games in the match
