Donna Vekic and Maya Joint clash in the second round of the 2025 WTA Merida Open in Mexico on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Here's our Donna Vekic vs Maya Joint prediction. This article will also include a Donna Vekic vs Maya Joint pick.
Donna Vekic Preview
Donna Vekic is the fifth seed at the WTA Merida Open. The Croatian is ranked 20th in the WTA rankings. This is the first time she will play in this WTA 500 event.
Vekic has previously played on Mexican soil, winning her last WTA title in Monterrey two years ago. Vekic is currently on a three-match losing streak and without winning a set.
She has only posted three match wins all season and they all came during her run to the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open in January.
Last season Vekic won 12 of 22 matches on outdoor hard courts.
Maya Joint Preview
Maya Joint is ranked 103rd in the WTA rankings. The 18-year-old is playing in Merida for the first time this week and had to battle through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw.
Joint defeated Emina Bektas and Solana Sierra in qualifying and then ousted Austria's Julia Grabher in the main draw.
In the victory over Grabher, Joint won 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 31 minutes. She hit 22 winners and 26 unforced errors, including one ace and two double faults.
Joint landed 60% of first serves and won 72% of first serve points (28/39). She won 46% of second serve points (12/26) and saved one of two break points.
Joint compiled 52% of return points (35/67) and broke Grabher five times. She has not lost a set this week, but will face a major test in the second round.
Donna Vekic vs Maya Joint Head-To-Head
• Vekic and Joint have never played before. It will be their first career meeting.
Donna Vekic vs Maya Joint Prediction
Vekic is the favorite here with a ton of experience and superior prowess on hard courts. I expect Vekic to control things right out of the gate. She's in desperate need of a win to snap a losing streak that could cost her a top 20 spot in the rankings. Joint is still learning and is a player who has shown immense potential in her young career. She has been very impressive in her first full season on tour, taking a set from Victoria Azarenka in Brisbane and beating seasoned pros like Sofia Kenin and Magda Linette. So, it's not an intimidating stage for her and Vekic will need to play at a very high level to get a result. That said, the games spread is a profitable market here with Joint keeping things watertight, but losing in two close sets.
Nur’s Pick Donna Vekic to win AND Over 20.5 games in the match
