Daniil Medvedev and Pierre-Hugues Herbert meet in the second round of the Open 13 Provence in Marseille on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Here's our Daniil Medvedev vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert prediction. This preview will also include a Daniil Medvedev vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert pick.
Daniil Medvedev Preview
Daniil Medvedev is on the cusp of a top 10 exit and he will be defending his title in Marseille this week. The Russian has started the new season in the worst possible manner.
Medvedev was knocked out of the Australian Open in the second round stage by American Next Gen star Learner Tien in five sets. His second tournament two weeks later was in Rotterdam and he fell to another early exit at the hands of Italy's Mattia Bellucci.
His two wins this season have been against Kasidit Samrej and the aging Stan Wawrinka and hardly looked convincing. With so many of his points chalked off after a below-par start to 2025, Medvedev finds himself in eighth spot in the rankings and has elected to take a wild card in Marseille.
He is the top seed at this ATP 250 event and received a bye in the first round.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert Preview
Pierre-Hugues Herbert beat compatriot Harold Mayot in the first round in three sets. The match took 29 games to decide and lasted two hours and 36 minutes.
In the victory, Herbert hit 16 aces and 13 double faults. He landed 46% of first serves in play and won 82% of first serve points (45/55).
Herbert won 39% of second serve points (25/64) and saved 10 of 13 break points in the match. The big-serving Frenchman won 40% of return points (40/99) and converted three of 12 break points.
Herbert came through qualifying in Marseille. He famously made the final four years ago (lost to Medvedev).
Daniil Medvedev and Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head-To-Head
• Medvedev and Herbert have played four times on the WTA Tour.
• The head-to-head is tied at 2-2 and they last played at this very tournament four years ago in the final. Medvedev won in three sets.
Daniil Medvedev and Pierre-Hugues Herbert Prediction
Another defeat for Medvedev and we can confidently say this is a full-blown crisis. Two second-round exits in high-profile tournaments points to a disastrous start to 2025 and Medvedev has quickly reacted to terminate the services of one of his coaches.
Herbert is a nightmare opponent indoors, with the French veteran enjoying the bulk of his success playing in these conditions where his massive serve is almost undefendable. He has beaten Medvedev twice in his career, but the last of those victories was six years ago. These days, he doesn't strike as someone capable of scoring an upset of that magnitude. But Medvedev's lackluster start and confidence issues opens a window of opportunity for Herbert to steal a set here.
Nur’s Pick Over 21.5 games in the match
