Kei Nishikori and Tomas Machac meet in the first round of the 2025 Dallas Open on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Here's our Kei Nishikori vs Tomas Machac prediction. This preview will also include a Kei Nishikori vs Tomas Machac pick.
Kei Nishikori Preview
Kei Nishikori is a regular fixture in American tournaments having won half of his 12 ATP titles there. But he has never participated in the main draw of the Dallas Open. This will be his first appearance and he is doing so with his double-digit ranking which is quite commendable.
Nishikori has been blighted with so many injuries throughout his career and the sad thing is that he might not have fulfilled all his personal goals. Still, he remains one of the most decorated Asian tennis players of all time.
The last three years were pretty rough for Nishikori, but he's managed to undergo successful surgery on his hip and is back playing competitive tennis again.
Last year, he played 33 matches which is the most he has put together in a single campaign since 2021. He won 20 and lost 13 and picked up a Challenger title in Helsinki.
Nishikori has always been fond of the Challenger level in a bid to restore his ranking and fitness. And that decision clearly paid dividends as he starts the 2025 season inside the top 80.
Tomas Machac Preview
Tomas Machac is another player whose early phase of his career has been hit with major injury setbacks. Luckily for the Czech, he's got time. He is only 24 and one suspects he can only get better with age.
Machac will look to improve his fitness record and also his ATP ranking. Already he sits at a career-high no. 25 in the ATP rankings after he won 37 matches at Tour level last season.
This year, he has competed in three tournaments. He was part of the Czech team that reached the quarterfinals of the United Cup. Machac had to retire from his match against Taylor Fritz because of cramps.
At the Australian Open, he reached the third round and lost to Novak Djokovic. His most recent win was in the Davis Cup qualifying against South Korea's Soonwoo Kwon.

• Nishikori and Machac have never played on the ATP Tour.
Kei Nishikori vs Tomas Machac Prediction
It's a matchup between two players who have struggled immensely to stay fit for an entire season. Nishikori is a stalwart of Japanese tennis, but he was extremely unfortunate that his body didn't allow him to reach his full potential considering that he was once tipped as a future Grand Slam champion.
Machac's early career is taking a similar route with good results but followed by a series of injuries. The Czech has a better record on indoor hard courts than Nishikori at all levels. However, at this stage of his career, these are the sort of conditions Nishikori will like. The surface is less demanding to his body and maybe that will help him to have a more robust playing style.
