Maria Timofeeva and Ann Li meet in the second round of the 2025 Singapore Open on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Here's our Maria Timofeeva vs Ann Li prediction. This preview will also include a Maria Timofeeva vs Ann Li pick.
Maria Timofeeva Preview
Maria Timofeeva was given a lifeline with a lucky loser entry at the 2025 Singapore Open. The Russian had lost in qualifying but was brought in as a late replacement for the injured Amanda Anisimova.
Not many people forecasted her upset win in the main draw. She defeated China's Xiyu Wang in straight sets. The match took 22 games to decide and lasted an hour and 47 minutes.
Timofeeva hit five aces and three double faults. She landed 71% of first serves and won 74% of first serve points (37/50).
Timofeeva won 50% of second serve points (10/20) and saved two of four break points on her serve.
The World No. 254 won 42% of return points (28/67) and converted three of six break points. It's her first WTA main draw win since July 2024 in Budapest.
Ann Li Preview
Ann Li, for her part, defeated Australia's Daria Saville in straight sets. The match took 16 games to decide and just 69 minutes of playing time.
In the victory, Li hit five aces and three double faults. She landed 55% of first serves in play and won 70% of first serve points (21/30).
Li won 52% of second serve points (13/25) and saved five of six break points.
The American won 55% of return points (23/42) and converted five of six break points in the match. She snaps a two-match losing run and picks up her fifth win of 2025.
Maria Timofeeva vs Ann Li Head-To-Head
• Timofeeva and Li have not played at WTA level, but met once on the ITF Tour.
• That match happened last season in Barcelona with Timofeeva being forced to retire through injury.
Maria Timofeeva vs Ann Li Prediction
Maria Timofeeva finds herself outside the Top 200 now that those fourth-round points from the Australian Open have been chalked off. The Russian's talent doesn't belong there that's for sure, having previously won a WTA title as a lucky loser. But she has a poor injury record with five documented retirements in 2024, not to mention she didn't feature in a handful of other tournaments because of fitness issues.
If she can stay fit, she has the game to climb up the rankings again. But it's a big if, and right now, she cannot be relied upon to win matches on a consistent basis. Give me the energetic Li for the win and a place in the quarterfinal in Singapore.
Nur’s Pick Ann Li in three sets
