Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic meet in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Here's our Coco Gauff vs Belinda Bencic prediction. This preview also includes a Coco Gauff vs Belinda Bencic pick.
Coco Gauff Preview
Coco Gauff's progress into the last 16 of the 2025 Australian Open was so serene. The 20-year-old beat Canadian lefty Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.
The world No. 3 has not lost a set and remains undefeated this year after notching her eighth successive win in 2025. Her win streak stands at 10 matches dating back to last season's WTA Finals in Riyadh which the American won the title.
Gauff's victory over Fernandez took 18 games to decide and lasted an hour and 17 minutes. She compiled 18 winners and 25 unforced errors.
Gauff hit five aces and four double faults. She landed 60% of first serves and won 89% of first-serve points (24/27).
The American won 56% of second serve points (10/18) and only faced one break point in the match.
Gauff won 47% of return points (27/58) and converted four of 10 break points.
This is the third year in a row she has made the second week of the Australian Open. Her best result was last year's semifinal finish.
Belinda Bencic Preview
Belinda Bencic won the battle of the mothers albeit via retirement after opponent Naomi Osaka succumbed to an abdominal injury.
Bencic looked to be in danger of losing the opening set of their third-round match after dropping serve twice and giving Osaka a 5-2 cushion.
But despite having the insurance of a double break, Osaka could not bag the set. She was unable to serve as fluidly as when the match started and Bencic broke back late in the set to force a tie-break.
There, the Swiss dominated, garnering three mini breaks on the Osaka serve and served for the set coolly. Osaka, however, was unable to continue after a brief consultation with the physios. It looks like it might have been the same issue that afflicted her in Auckland.
Bencic has never made the Australian Open quarterfinal in her career but has now reached the last 16 three times.
Coco Gauff vs Belinda Bencic Head-To-Head
• Gauff and Bencic have split their two WTA meetings.
• Bencic won their first match on Australian soil in the semifinal of the 2021 Adelaide International in three sets.
• Gauff avenged that en route to winning the Citi Open in Washington in 2023.
Coco Gauff vs Belinda Bencic Prediction
In her first Grand Slam tournament as a mother, Bencic will fight for a spot in the quarterfinal. It was a bittersweet moment on how she got here, picking up her seventh win of the season, but only after her opponent was forced to retire due to injury. Nevertheless, she'll take it.
This is turning out to be a very workable draw for Gauff who might have handpicked Bencic over Osaka. But the Swiss is no pushover and has played two clean matches in the first two rounds including the dismissal of World No. 22 Jelena Ostapenko. Ultimately though, even for a player of Bencic's precise shot-making abilities, she'll struggle to tear apart Gauff's rock-solid defense.
