This was Burrage’s second win of the season (she defeated Vivian Wang in Auckland in the main draw).

Burrage's story is one of resilience and probably has flown under the radar in the build-up to the Australian Open. She came very close to retirement last year when she had to undergo wrist surgery. But quitting was clearly not an option as she explained in her pre-tournament press conference.

I think she can be very proud and delighted with how things have since panned out. The surgery was a success and Burrage made a late return in 2024 and won her biggest career title to date at the W100 ITF in Dubai. She's carried that momentum into the new season and won her maiden main draw match in Melbourne on Sunday. But this is where the test gets even more complicated. Gauff was at her scintillating best in dismissing Sofia Kenin and hasn't lost a set in 2025. Burrage's serve is her biggest weapon. She can leverage that to win a few cheap points because the American will win the majority of the baseline exchanges. Gauff wins this match, but look out for Burrage to rack up five games here.
