Nick Kyrgios and Jacob Fearnley meet in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Monday, January 13, 2025. Here's our Nick Kyrgios vs Jacob Fearnley prediction. This preview also includes a Nick Kyrgios vs Jacob Fearnley pick.

Nick Kyrgios Preview

This is bound to be an emotional return to the Australian Open for Nick Kyrgios. It's been three years since Kyrgios last featured in the main draw play in Melbourne, losing to Daniil Medvedev in four sets.

Kyrgios was injured in those two years battling knee and wrist issues and only played one match on grass in Stuttgart two years ago. He was forced to postpone his comeback for the longest time.

Missing the Australian Open again was clearly not in his plans that's for sure, and he's painstakingly worked to get himself fit for the event which is very important for him as it is the only time he gets to perform in front of his home fans.

He played in Brisbane in the opening week of the season losing a tie-break feast to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. That was only his second match since 2023. Kyrgios picked up an abdominal injury after that and hasn't played since.

Jacob Fearnley Preview

Jacob Fearnley is a four-time champion on the ATP Challenger Tour. Fearnley won all those titles in the past year in a breakout year for him.

He'll fondly be remembered for taking a set from Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in his Grand Slam senior debut and has quickly ascended in the rankings.

Fearnley is up to 86th which is his personal best ranking on the ATP Tour. He started the year playing at the Canberra Challenger losing to an in-form Joao Fonseca in the semis.

Fearnley is only 23 and one of the youngsters to watch at this year's Australian Open where he will make his main draw bout.

• Kyrgios and Fearnely have never met on the ATP Tour.

Nick Kyrgios vs Jacob Fearnley Prediction

Will Kyrgios even be cleared by the doctors to play this match? Time is of the essence here as the Australian pulled out from a charity match against his good friend Novak Djokovic a couple of days ago. Kyrgios is hopeful he'll recover in time to play. It only adds intrigue to what is expected to be a fervent night inside John Cain Arena. It is the perfect setting for Kyrgios. Playing at home in front of a packed court cheering him every step of the way. He thrives in such an atmosphere and he'll work the crowd and never doubts his ability.

But let's get the facts right. Kyrgios has played just TWO competitive matches in the last 24 months. He has an abdominal injury that will likely not heal completely by the time he takes to the court. He's up against a breakout star on the Challenger Tour. This could go awry or awesome for Kyrgios. I'll go with the former.

Nur’s Pick Jacob Fearnley in four sets
