Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex Michelsen meet in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Monday, January 13, 2025. Here's our Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex Michelsen prediction. This preview also includes a Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex Michelsen pick.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Preview

Stefanos Tsitsipas has played one tournament this season and that was at the United Cup. Tsitsipas represented Greece in the mixed-team competition.

He beat Pablo Carreno Busta in three sets in his first match but shockingly lost to Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan. Greece was eliminated in the group stage.

Ahead of this year's Australian Open, which Tsitsipas will play for the eighth time, he called it his "home Slam" as he enjoys the majority of support at a non-home playing Grand Slam tournament from the Greek fans.

No wonder Tsitsipas has played some of his best tennis Down Under, reaching the semifinal back in 2019, the year he ended Roger Federer's reign as two-time defending champion.

Tsitsipas also reached his most recent Grand Slam final in Melbourne, losing the showpiece event to Novak Djokovic.

Alex Michelsen Preview

Alex Michelsen is ranked at a career-high of No. 41 in the ATP rankings. The 20-year-old is among the fast-rising American players on tour, posting a 45-34 record in the past year.

Michelsen reached two finals in Newport and Winston-Salem but didn't win either of them. So, he'll have to wait a little bit longer. But with the way he is playing, that drought will surely end this season.

Michelsen won 26 matches out of 40 on hard courts last season. He reached the third round of the Australian Open on debut 12 months ago, beating James McCabe and Jiri Lehecka before losing to Alexander Zverev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex Michelsen Head-To-Head

• Tsitsipas and Michelsen have met once on the ATP Tour.

• Michelsen shocked the Greek in the opening round of the 2024 Japan Open in Tokyo in three sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex Michelsen Prediction

Michelsen winning here wouldn't really qualify as an upset. Tsitsipas is struggling right now and it seems there is a lot going on behind the scenes in his personal and professional life. I'm not sure how that has affected his game, but he has massively underperformed. He lost almost half of the matches he played on hard courts in the past year and he has drawn one of the toughest unseeded players in his opening match of this year's Australian Open.

Michelsen played the Greek off the court when they last met in Tokyo just a few months ago and despite his inexperience at Grand Slam level, he was fond of these courts 12 months ago when he won two main draw matches. Bank on at least four sets here with a slight edge on Michelsen.

Nur’s Pick Over 3.5 sets in the match
