Jessica Pegula and Yulia Putintseva meet in the semifinal of the 2025 WTA Adelaide International on Friday, January 10, 2025. Here's our Jessica Pegula vs Yulia Putintseva prediction. This preview will also include a Jessica Pegula vs Yulia Putintseva pick.
Jessica Pegula Preview
Jessica Pegula only needed 48 minutes to reach the semifinal of the WTA Adelaide International thanks to a retirement by her opponent Ashlyn Krueger.
Pegula and Krueger were doubles partners this week but withdrew shortly after winning one match together.
In the fourth career meeting between the two Americans in singles, the result was the same as it was in three previous matches, with Pegula taking a 6-4 lead in the first set and then led by a break in the second set when Krueger called it quits.
Pegula finished the match with 11 winners and six unforced errors. She hit three aces and one double fault in the match.
The top seed landed 73% of first serves and won 83% of first-serve points (24/29). She won 36% of second-serve points (4/11) and saved the two break points she faced on serve.
Pegula won 44% of return points (16/36) and converted two out of two break points. This is her first semifinal since she made it all the way to her maiden Grand Slam final at the 2024 US Open last September.
Pegula had won her opening match in Adelaide against Maria Sakkari in straight sets.
Yulia Putintseva Preview
Yulia Putintseva won the longest match of the WTA Adelaide International in a thrilling battle against Diana Shnaider. The Kazakhstani took three hours and 14 minutes before she brought the gripping quarterfinal match to a stop on her seventh match point.
Putintseva finished the match with 36 winners and 56 unforced errors. She landed 74% of first serves and won 67% of first-serve points (70/105).
Putintseva won 39% of second-serve points (14/36) and saved eight of 12 break points on her serve. She shone behind the return, winning five of 17 games, after converting her five break points.
Putintseva is contesting her first WTA semifinal since June 2024 when she won the Birmingham title on grass.

• Pegula and Putintseva have met twice in their careers.
• Pegula beat Putintseva both times on hard courts in Toronto (2022) and Montreal (2023).
Jessica Pegula vs Yulia Putintseva Prediction
Despite the anticlimactic finish to her quarterfinal match, Pegula looked pretty solid. The slight concern will maybe be that she hasn't gotten sufficient play time since her return from a knee injury. If Pegula was looking for a serious test before the final in Adelaide and the upcoming Australian Open, she'll get it in the form of the late-blooming Yulia Putintseva.
I've been fond of Putintseva's game for a while and she is very close to breaking the top 20 for the first time at the age of 30. She brings something totally out of the ordinary on the WTA Tour and her matches are anything but predictable. That being said, Putintseva still lacks the baseline solidity that usually separates her from the elite. Make no mistake about Putintseva's qualities, she's a fantastic shotmaker with all the trick shots up her sleeve, but Pegula's steady and often consistent game should be too good. That Top 20 debut for Putintseva will have to wait for now.
