Jessica Pegula and Ashlyn Krueger meet in the quarterfinal of the 2025 WTA Adelaide International on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Here's our Jessica Pegula vs Ashlyn Krueger prediction. This preview will also include a Jessica Pegula vs Ashlyn Krueger pick.
Jessica Pegula Preview
For the first time since 2020, Jessica Pegula won her opening match of the new season. Pegula beat former top 10 player Maria Sakkari in the second round of the WTA Adelaide International to reach the last eight.
The top seed had taken well-deserved rest in the opening week to try and heal completely from a knee injury that derailed her WTA Finals campaign in Riyadh last November.
But there were no issues fitness-wise for Pegula who overpowered Sakkari from the baseline. In the victory, which took 17 games to decide, Pegula hit 23 winners and 17 unforced errors.
The American landed 65% of first serves and won 63% of first-serve points (30/46). She won half of her second serve points (8/16) and held in six of her eight service games.
Pegula won six of nine return games and tallied 54% of return points in the match (32/59). She converted six of 13 break points. The last time she won her opening match of a new season, she made the final (Auckland in 2020).
Ashlyn Krueger Preview
Ashlyn Krueger upset former World No. 2 Paula Badosa in her second-round match. The tall American benefitted from a lucky loser spot and has now beaten two higher-ranked opponents in the main draw of the WTA Adelaide International.
Krueger beat Marta Kostyuk in three sets in her first-round match and went the full distance again in the second round against Badosa in two hours and 25 minutes.
The match took 34 games to decide and featured two tie-break sets. Krueger prevailed 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
In the victory, Krueger hit 37 winners and 43 unforced errors. She landed 60% of first serves and won 61% of first-serve points (43/70).
Krueger won 50% of second-serve points (23/46) and saved nine of 13 break points on her delivery.
The Texan won 43% of return points (45/104) and converted six of 11 break points. This is her second straight quarterfinal to start the year (she lost to Polina Kudermetova in Brisbane).
Jessica Pegula vs Ashlyn Krueger Head-To-Head
• Pegula and Krueger have played each other three times on the WTA Tour.
• Pegula leads the head-to-head 3-0 winning all of those encounters in straight sets.
• The two times Pegula beat Krueger, she went on to win the tournament (Seoul and Toronto).
Jessica Pegula vs Ashlyn Krueger Prediction
Playing and beating Krueger must be some sort of good omen for Pegula who has won the tournament in Seoul and Toronto in the past after downing her countrywoman during the week. It remains to be seen if that is the case here. On the evidence of her first outing of the season, she couldn't have asked for a better start. Composed and clinical. When Pegula is playing at this level, very few players can stop her. Krueger has top 50 aspirations and she'll achieve that landmark if she upsets her experienced compatriot, but I thought her game was littered with so many errors on Wednesday. It also looks like Pegula has fully recovered from whatever niggling knee injury that bothered her during the off-season. Give me the top seed in straights.
Nur’s Pick Jessica Pegula in straight sets
