Beatriz Haddad Maia and Madison Keys meet in the first round of the 2025 Adelaide International on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Here's our Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Madison Keys prediction. This preview will also include a Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Madison Keys pick.
Beatriz Haddad Maia Preview
Beatriz Haddad Maia started her 2025 season representing Brazil at the United Cup. Haddad Maia was her country's WTA No. 1 player in that tournament, but lost her two singles matches against Xinyu Gao of China and Laura Siegemund of Germany.
Brazil finished bottom of their group and exited the competition. It was far from a convincing participation for Haddad Maia who had previously won three of four singles matches at the United Cup.
She will now head to Adelaide to make her second main draw appearance at the WTA 500 event. She lost in the first round 12 months ago to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Haddad Maia won 25 matches and lost 17 on hard courts throughout last season. She didn't particularly impress in the tune-up events, but reached the third round of the Australian Open.
Madison Keys Preview
Madison Keys opted to start her season in Auckland, New Zealand for the first time since 2013. As the top seed, Keys lost in the quarterfinal to eventual champion Clara Tauson.
Before that, she had defeated Lucia Bronzetti and Jaqueline Cristian each in straight sets. Keys only played 36 matches last year, finishing her season with defeat to Haddad Maia in Wuhan.
The American got married to long-time partner and former ATP player Bjorn Fratangelo during the off-season. So, this partially explains why she didn't impress after the US Open, with her commitments lying elsewhere.
Keys missed the entire Australian swing last year because of injury and played only 13 matches on hard courts, winning seven and losing six. This is her first participation at the Adelaide 500 tournament.
Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Madison Keys Head-To-Head
• Haddad Maia and Keys have met four times at WTA level.
• The head-to-head between these two players is tied at 2-2.
• Haddad Maia leads 2-1 on hard courts.
• Haddad Maia beat Keys in their last meeting in Wuhan less than three months ago.
Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Madison Keys Prediction
Four spots separate Haddad Maia (16th) and Keys (20th) in the WTA rankings, but both are unseeded in Adelaide, showing the depth of the field in this tournament. It is stacked.
Haddad Maia is already 0-2 at the start of the 2025 season, losing her two singles matches at the United Cup as a heavy favorite. Keys, meanwhile, reached the quarterfinal in her first tournament at the ASB Classic in Auckland, winning two matches in straight sets before losing to an in-form Tauson.
The head-to-head makes for pretty interesting reading because Keys has faltered twice against Haddad Maia on hard courts, which is naturally her strongest surface. But I'd be more concerned for the Brazilian who tends to have slower starts to a new season. By contrast, Keys looked sharp competing in Auckland this past week and should take advantage of Haddad Maia's ailment which seemed to limit her power and movement at the United Cup.
