Grigor Dimitrov and Jordan Thompson clash in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Brisbane International on Friday, January 3, 2025. Here's our Grigor Dimitrov vs Jordan Thompson prediction. This preview will also include a Grigor Dimitrov vs Jordan Thompson pick.
Grigor Dimitrov Preview
Grigor Dimitrov is through to his eighth quarterfinal at the Brisbane International. Since making his tournament debut at this event 12 years ago, Dimitrov has made the final three times, lifting the title on two occasions with the most recent triumph being 12 months ago.
Dimitrov's title defense started positively with a straight-sets win over Yannick Hanfmann. The match took 22 games to decide.
In the second round, Dimitrov beat home player Aleksandar Vukic 6-2, 7-6 in 83 minutes.
Dimitrov recorded 26 winners and 25 unforced errors. He hit 12 aces and one double fault.
The Bulgarian landed 62% of first serves and won 94% of first-serve points (31/33). He won 65% of second-serve points (13/20) and did not face a single break point in the match.
Dimitrov won 38% of return points (28/74) and converted two out of 10 break points on the Vukic serve.
Dimitrov had a serve rating of 332, and by contrast, Vukic had a serve rating of 260, pretty much summing where the match was won and lost.
Jordan Thompson Preview
For the third time in his career, Jordan Thomspon will be in the quarterfinal of the Brisbane International. Thompson scored a massive upset on the opening day when he knocked out former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in the first round in three sets.
In the second round, Thompson took out Alex Michelsen in straight sets in a match that took 21 games to decide.
Thompson trailed 2-5 in the first set of the match against the American but saved three set points to hold for 3-5 and then won four straight games to steal the set.
That clearly broke Michelsen's belief and he dropped his serve twice in the second set. Thompson converted on his fourth match point to seal the win.
Thompson finished the match with 22 winners and 25 unforced errors and had a serve rating of 301, which was particularly impressive after saving six out of seven break points.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Jordan Thompson Head-To-Head
• Dimitrov and Thompson have met three times on the ATP Tour.
• Dimitrov leads their head-to-head 2-1 winning their last meeting at this very tournament last season.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Jordan Thompson Prediction
Dimitrov has an exceptional record in Brisbane reaching at least the quarterfinal four times and winning the title twice in that time and is poised to make it to final Sunday again. But all good things must come to an end at some point and there are cracks to his title defense this week, with Dimitrov having to win one tie-break apiece against Hanfmann and Vukic - opponents who are seasoned pros but not necessarily challengers for the title.
The Australian summer is such an important pitstop for Thompson who is determined to play well on home soil as the tour doesn't return Down Under until after the next 11 months. He's coming off a career-best season and he's just beaten the dangerous Berrettini. Moreover, he's now familiar with Dimitrov's style and it hasn't been all plain sailing for the defending champion each time he's faced Thompson with all three previous meetings seeing at least 21 games. Dimitrov is the rightful favorite, but there is good value in backing a high-flying Thompson.
