Daria Kasatkina Preview
Daria Kasatkina won a three-hour first match of the new season at the 2025 Brisbane International.
Kasatkina who is the third seed in this tournament thanks to her amazing 2024 season to get her ranking into single digit, overcame American Peyton Stearns in a crazy match that was full of drama until the very last point.
The match lasted three hours and 23 minutes and featured one incredible game in the third set which took 28 minutes. In the end Kasatkina won showing a bit more composure and steely nerves to break to love for the victory.
Kasatkina hit four aces and eight double faults in the match and landed 68% of first serves.
The Russian won 60% of first-serve points (53/89) and 38% of second-serve points (16/42) while saving an astonishing 15 out of 23 break points.
Kasatkina won 49% of return points (66/136) and converted eight of 22 break points.
Kasatkina has reached the Brisbane quarterfinals once in her career (2024).
Polina Kudermetova Preview
Polina Kudermetova is the younger sister of former Top 10 player Veronika Kudermetova. Veronika, of course, has exited the Brisbane International at the first hurdle against Peyton Stearns (who Kasatkina defeated). The younger Kudermetova is making her debut at this WTA 500 event.
The prospect of the two sisters playing each other was in the offing, but that won't happen at least this week.
Polina Kudermetova qualified for this tournament and won two main draw matches to reach the last 16.
She has played 9 sets and won eight of them. Her second-round win over 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova is the only match she has dropped a set this week.
But despite losing the first set in a tie-break, Kudermetova bounced back strongly losing only five games in the next two sets to turn the match on its head.
The 21-year-old finished the match with five aces and four double faults to her name.
She landed 59% of first serves and won 78% of first-serve points (45/58). Kudermetova won 49% of second-serve points (20/41) and saved seven out of eight break points.
Kudermetova won 43% of return points (38/89) and converted five out of six break points.
The victory against her compatriot is her first Top 30 win of her young career and is getting ever closer to breaking into the Top 100.
Daria Kasatkina vs Polina Kudermetova Head-To-Head
• Kasatkina and Kudermetova have not played each other at the WTA level. This is the first clash between them.
Daria Kasatkina vs Polina Kudermetova Prediction
This should be a competitive match. Despite this being only her second match of the season the oddsmakers are factoring fatigue as a possible cause of Kasatkina potentially losing this match. Her match against Peyton Stearns sucked a lot out of her energy reserves and we saw plenty of mishits and poor decision-making by Kasatkina. Thankfully for her, her opponent just could not hold her serve down the stretch.
Kudermetova has played more matches than Kasatkina already this week, but it's mostly been routine wins, meaning she's not depleted of her energy levels. With very tidy power and control in her shots, she's got a reasonable chance of fashioning an upset against her experienced countrywoman.
